Blood in the urine

Visible or microscopic blood always warrants prompt assessment.

Overview

Blood in the urine — whether you can see it (visible haematuria) or it is found on a urine test (non-visible haematuria) — should always be assessed by a specialist. In most cases the cause is not serious, but because it can occasionally be the first sign of a significant condition, prompt investigation matters.

Common causes

When to seek advice

Any episode of visible blood in the urine should be assessed promptly, even if it happens only once and is painless. If you are also feverish, in significant pain, or unable to pass urine, seek urgent care.

How we investigate it

Investigation is quick and thorough. We combine urine tests, a flexible cystoscopy to inspect the bladder, and imaging of the kidneys and urinary tract (ultrasound or CT). Most patients have a clear answer — and a plan — within a single visit.
